I came upon a neat little trick when I was making a fountain for my game. Basically, what you're going to try to do is make fish in a pond. It doesn't sound like much, but it adds a sense of visual depth to a game.
Ok, this is very simple. First draw a fish. Don't draw it like a normal fish, but draw a sillhouette of a fish. Make it a darker color than the water it'll be in (probably a dark blue). Now, make a pond in your game. Make it to where there is no movement allowed in your pond. Now you want to fill in the pond with DEEPER water. It could just be a darker shade, or it could be the same color; it'll work as long as it is a different tile. Fill in the pond you just made with the deeper water, making sure to leave a border of the original water around the pond. Now make it to where you can move around in the deeper water. Place a fish event (or fish events) that move(s) randomly inside the deeper water. Now whenever you pass the pond you'll see little fishies swimming around!
